Apartment Guide

After food and clothes, the third basic necessity of life that a person has to work for is shelter. There is no one in this world who would not like a roof over his or her head that he or she could call his or her own. People work hard so that they can maintain a home that could be a reflection of their personality.

Apartments – a shrinking world

The world is becoming smaller; and so are our houses. The palatial villas and detached houses of the years gone by have given way to the more practical and infinitely more suitable apartments (ore flats if you prefer to use the Queen’s English). The primary feature that sets apart apartments from other types of houses is the fact that it is a part of a larger building and is a self contained housing unit.

Types of apartments

Apartments are classified into a number of different types. Although the categories are a bit vague, the following classifications are apparent.

• Studio – The smallest type of apartments. These apartments typically have a single large room that is a living room, kitchen and bedroom combined.

• One bedroom apartments – This type of apartment is one step above studio apartments. The bedroom is separate from other rooms. Similarly there are two bedroom and three bedroom apartments with the corresponding number of bedrooms.

• Garden apartment – They are individual apartments with the characteristics of a townhouse. These are usually one storied and they are not stacked one on top of the other. The grounds are usually more landscaped.

• Penthouse – Penthouses are the apartments located at the topmost floor of a high rise building. They usually have luxury features and thus are priced higher than the other flats in the building.

• Condominium – Condominiums are not a different type of apartments in terms of design. Instead the difference lies in the fact that whereas the apartment itself is owned by the owner, the common facilities such as hallways, heating system and elevators etc. are shared.
